A CULTURAL WALK: THE FORT SAINT-LOUIS

Fort Saint-Louis Martinique

History and culture enthusiasts, those intrigued by wartime stories and lovers of architecture will greatly appreciate this outstanding historic gem: Le Fort Saint-Louis. This rocky headland overhanging the Bay of Fort-de-France, which happens to be one of the most beautiful bays in the world, has recently reopened to the public.

Closed in 2001 for renovation, this impressive accomplishment of the 17th century is a significant military fortification of the Lesser Antilles and an active naval base. More than 100 French Navy personnel station here full-time in a section of the fort closed to the public.

Listed as a historic site of France in 1973, the Fort-Saint-Louis is truly a must-see spot.

Discover a redefined brand new path, starting now from the seaside “La Française” and going on to the Ste-Marthe Bastion. Throughout the twenty stages, observe watch-turret, casemates, loopholes, cannons and flags … Each step is a discovery, and this visit will help you to enhance your Martinique experience.

Guided tours are available in English, French, Spanish, and Italian.
Please note that tours are not recommended for pregnant women, people with walking disabilities or those confined to wheelchairs.

The entry fee is 8€ for adults and 4€ for children (minimum required age is 6 years old).

DISCOVERING THE ZOO OF MARTINIQUE

Zoo Martinique

BEACH RESTAURANT: LE PETIBONUM

Le Petitbonum Restaurant

Ideally situated on the west coast of Martinique, Le Petibonum restaurant is the perfect mix of excellent food, a peaceful ambiance and an original location.

International half-marathon in Fort-de-France

Only six weeks left before the 30th edition of the International half-marathon of Fort-de-France, taking place this year on November 30th!

Organized by the capital-city of Fort-de-France, this competition is also a major festival and a popular event held annually.

FRENCH WEST INDIAN – SAUCE CHIEN

Loup de mer and sauce chien

The perfect recipe to add to your barbecue menu, or with our legendary “poulet boucané.”
It is the little something that will make all the difference

Ingredients

  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled
  • 2 medium shallots, peeled and quartered
  • 1 Scotch bonnet or habanero chili, seeded and quartered
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh ginger
  • 1/2 cup flatleaf parsley leaves
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh chives or scallion greens
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh or dried thyme
  • 1 scant teaspoon salt, or more, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Pinch of ground allspice
  • 1/3 cup fresh lime juice, or more, to taste
  • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

Cooking Instructions

Finely chop the garlic, shallots, chili, ginger, parsley and chives in a food processor. Add remaining ingredients, and process just to mix. Add 1/4 cup boiling water, and process to mix. Run the machine in short bursts until you have a coarse puree. If desired, add more salt or lime juice, to taste.

Drizzle the sauce over the meat or fish, and serve right away, with rice preferably.

The remaining of the preparation can be refrigerated for 3 days. Bon Appétit!

Meet The People

SANDRINE GRUDA: CHAMPION MADE IN MARTINIQUE

Sandrine Gruda

Sandrine is a talented French professional basketball player from Martinique, who currently plays the center position for the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA.

Born June 25th, 1987 in Cannes, she comes from an athletic family. Her dad, Ulysse Gruda, grew up on Martinique and played for the French men’s national basketball team.

Starting center for the French national team, she led her team to the EuroBasket 2009 title. Best scorer and rebounder of the French side, she also took part in the World Championship 2006 and the EuroBasket 2007, reaching the quarter-finals both times.

Before joining the WNBA, Gruda played professionally for the French club Union Sportive Valenciennes Olympic. She was also drafted 13th overall in the 2007 WNBA Draft by the Connecticut Sun but did not join the team until the 2008 season.

A great role player and with her height and length, Sandrine is a consistent rebounder and shot-blocker.

In 2014, she returned to the WNBA after a three-year absence, joining the Los Angeles Sparks as a backup center.
